The Cape Fear River Basin Studies Program at Guilford hosts a local version of the National Wild and Scenic Film Festival at the Historic Carolina Theatre in Downtown Greensboro on April 25th, 2014 at 7:30 pm to benefit the Haw River Assembly.

Now in its 11th year, Wild & Scenic focuses on films that speak to environmental concerns on a local level and celebrate the planet as a whole. “Films featured at Wild & Scenic give people a sense of place,” says Tour Manager, Lori Van Laanen. “In our busy lives, it’s easy to get disconnected from our role in the global ecosystem. When we realize that the change we need in this world begins with us we can start making a difference. Come watch and see!”

Students and faculty from Guilford College are hosting this film festival in our upper river basin in hopes of drawing a diverse audience to view these films and help us build community around shared water. The festival includes a series of environmental and adventure films that illustrate the Earth’s beauty, the challenges facing our planet, and the work communities are doing to protect the environment. The evening will feature Swine Country, a documentary about the human health effect of industrial hog farms in the Cape Fear River Basin. Guilford College student filmmakers Tom Clement and Sol Weiner will be on hand to answer questions.

The Cape Fear River Basin Studies Program at Guilford College is an initiative of the Center for Principled Problem Solving at Guilford College. The program includes a multi-year sequence of courses requiring engagement in the communities and environments of the Cape Fear River Basin. A traditionally Quaker college, Guilford is committed to working for “all things civil and useful.” The program is built around finding ways to apply academic skills to our place, defined by the watershed, with the assumption that nothing could be more civil or useful than a shared, healthy, water system that supports life at all levels.

The Haw River Assembly is a non-profit citizens’ group founded in 1982 to restore and protect the Haw River and Jordan Lake, and to build a watershed community that shares this vision.

Tickets for the festival are available through the Guilford College website. Click here.

For out of town guests, a special rate is available for an overnight stay at the Proximity Hotel. Details available upon event registration.
